In this autobiographical journey of self-discovery, 17-year-old Thera is floundering in the first official class of women undergraduates at Johns Hopkins University. To achieve her goal of becoming a doctor, Thera must free herself from misogyny, her mentally ill, racist mother, a life-threatening illness, and her own sense of inadequacy. Will the influence of Vivien Thomas, the Black man who pioneered heart surgery for children with blue baby syndrome help?
